Hard disagree. It’s used when referring to someone and you don’t know their gender or its implied with context. English is naturally gender neutral inclusive. For example, today my nephew told me his teacher was on a tv show, I asked “which show did they appear on?” Notice how the teacher wasn’t plurasied because the question refers to a singular person. Also, it’s a naturally gender ambiguous sentence which makes perfect sense. If your knickers are getting in a knot over how people classify their gender, then you need to ask yourself why you’re so personally affected.

There’s an absolute crazy person I follow on Twitter who preaches some totally incoherent religious ideas who refers to themselves in the In My Defense I Was Left Unsupervised T-Shirt besides I will buy this plural “TheyWe” (or singular “Doctor”) “They” never was solely a plural pronoun. It’s always been the gender neutral option in English. Not my fault the codification of grammar involved a lot of cramming rules in places they don’t fit, some borrowed from from Latin and Greek that make no sense. It literally functions as a singular whether you like it or not. I don’t know you so when someone says “u/ad_nauseam1 doesn’t know how words work” It was used as a singular pronoun by everyone when I was growing up in the 90s. Not a single person didn’t use it this way, especially when the identity of the person was unknown; i.e. they were a stranger. “They took my wallet!” “Them, over there!” This has just been intuitively understood by people for so long.
