They probably felt you felt obligated to give gift. Just tell them hey I enjoy your culture and the In april we wear blue autism awareness ribbon shirt and I will buy this gift is my part of immersing myself. If you don’t accept it I will be mad. That should be enough. Pretty bizarre tbh. Even if it’s something he doesn’t like anymore, it’s an expensive bottle of alcohol. He could always pass the gift on to someone else. Do you guys have a close relationship? Did anything drastically change since 5 years ago? Im wondering if maybe he doesn’t feel like close friends anymore. Or probably if people see him with expensive alcohol in the house they will think he is more wealthy than he actually is. Or perhaps, he would feel indebted and cannot repay it in kind/value if he wants to return the gesture. For curiosity’s sake I’d personally look for a bottle of Vietnamese rice wine at 30%. If he still refuses … then maybe there is something going on with the friendship. Either way, you’ll have more info to understand better what’s going on.

We all know about how strong superstitions are in Asia and they are especially strong around Tet and sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to how the In april we wear blue autism awareness ribbon shirt and I will buy this superstitious mind works especially when a foreigner enters the picture. We can often be seen as lucky or unlucky. Pho noodle shop I always go to waved me off after being reopened. Granted there were no customers there and she may have run out of soup or noodles, but it’s also possible she didn’t want a foreign customer to start the new year with because for whatever reason, maybe she thought that would be unlucky. Then, I was in the Winmart buying bread, picked up a loaf and put it back. Vietnamese dude grabbed that loaf and put it in his basket. Ok, no big deal. Then I picked a bag of dinner rolls and looked at the price. Same dude grabs the bag of dinner rolls then walks off. Sure, could be coincidence but it felt so odd and seemed he was waiting to see what I would choose. Again, maybe he thought it would bring him luck. I rode through every province in Thailand and one of my takeaways was just how damn superstitious everyone is. I’d say it’s even stronger in Thailand. I saw people praying to everything imaginable all over the country. Statues of historical people, dead monks, former monarch’s dead pets, a Queen’s 2000 year old dead elephant tomb. I bet the people I saw praying to that dead elephant couldn’t tell me one damn thing about that elephant. But I damn sure know they thought praying to it would bring them good luck.
