Simple answer, if you want to see how the US Government would run their own healthcare system, look at the VA 😛 Understaffed, underfunded, and frequent scandals such as rolling names back to the bottom of waiting lists automatically without even checking for availability, just using it as a dump file to throw names in until they no longer pester you for an appointment. Cuz they died. Also, we see the healthcare up in our hat (Canada), some of us even having family up there, and dear lordy I wouldn’t wish that mess on my worst enemy. Last I saw, Canadians average the same healthcare expenses as Americans, but with significantly worse outcomes and typically triple the delays in scheduling appointments and procedures. Half of my family is Canadian and based on their experiences? Yeah, American healthcare can be rough for some, but at least it isn’t Canadian healthcare! I don’t think we “fear” it, a lot of Americans realize that nothing is free. Who do you think pays the taxes? We are already paying so much in taxes for various things, plus -other- people’s health care (including a lot of people who have entered our country illegally)

Because everyone who wants free Healthcare compares our country to a country that has less than 10% of our population. Even Canada only has 38 million. That’s a silly take. No one fears free healthcare, we fear the government being in control of the free healthcare. We’ll the smart ones do. Honestly? Because I have it very good right now. The insurance I have is fully paid for by my employer. I pay 10 dollars to see a doctor and 5 dollars for prescription medications. ER visits have a 125 dollar copay and that’s the most expensive thing I’ll ever pay. I had a lot of health problems last year and had to see several specialists and the longest I had to wait to get in was 2 days. I realize this isn’t the reality for many other Americans. So part of me wants to switch to a system that covers everyone equally. But the selfish part of me is scared of losing what I have and ending up waiting weeks to see a doctor. And I’m scared a transition to single payer would be a complete shit show tbh.
