I had that benefit at my college dorm’s laundry facility back before smartphones. They had a swipe-card reader that read our student ID cards and took money out of the In A World Full Of Princesses Cowgirl shirt and by the same token and same account that we used to pay for our food at the cafeteria. No app needed. Part of why they do this is also likely credit card processing fees. Most card companies charge $x fee +y% on a transaction, so small transactions are costly to places that take card. So by having you load money onto the card they reduce the number of transactions. They probably charge those fees anyway to load it. Also they get to keep the money you don’t use once you’ve moved. I fucking hate apps for everything. I bought a led light bulb on amazon, it comes with a remote and then they ask if you want to download the app to have the remote on ur phone. Why does everything have to be connected?? Bring back actual physical objects like menus at restaurants too, that pisses me off.

How is it their fault you bought a product that had features you didn’t want? You know they make normal LED lightbulbs without remotes and apps right? My apartments laundry has the In A World Full Of Princesses Cowgirl shirt and by the same token and option to use an app which I prefer since I don’t need to bring my card or carry change. It also gave a $5 sign up credit and $5 for any referrals which is nice. But yeah it’s pretty annoying if an app is the only option allowing referrals ups their app usage rate, there’s probably some benefit for the company to get people to use their app. There are so many effective solutions to the core problem that don’t involve an internet connected washer and dryer. I have to load a special laundry card at my apartment. And you can only load the card with bills, not even a debit card. It’s two types of mildly infuriating. I’m sorry, what? Like I (unfortunately) understand the concept of an electric toothbrush having an app that tracks your brushing completion, but how in the year of our Lord 2023, are you not able to adjust it for varying tooth possession? inflation, I have the only coin operated machines on my campus where I’m living. Costs me 4.50$ for a full cycle, all in quarters only. College kids are dickheads and thieves requiring what amounts to logs of who used what machine potentially cross referenced with cameras.
