Being so strict that I had to lie about things like where I was going and I was never comfortable with sharing anything with them because I’d always be lectured, even when I was 18 (I’m 27 now). Think stuff like “you’re my children and I love all of you. Now don’t get me wrong, they were and still are good parents. Just old fashioned, and with that comes a lot of methods that aren’t really that good for children’s mental health. I’m sure many of the 80s-90s kids have been traumatized by what was considered good parenting back then. Mental and physical abuse.. always being there for them mentally and physically at all times. I’d never leave or kick my babies out. Ever. Especially after I reacted in a way to hurt them… we really have to learn as we get older about how this life thing goes… and the abuse ain’t it. Evil for evil never wins. To ever tell my son “you are just a kid, you know nothing”. Always hated that! I knew I didn’t know as much, but doesn’t mean I knew nothing.

Already raised mine, but essentially made sure they were all treated equally and NOT favored/compared to each other. It ruined the potential relationship i could’ve had with my dad. He’s not alive anymore. I learned things that changed the way i looked at everything my whole life. Having kids when you didn’t want them in the first place. I’m not making that mistake. Growing up to “I wish I never had kids!” Or “You ruined my life” takes a toll on a kid. overshare about super inappropriate topics (like complaining about lack of sex between them, confessing to cheating etc.) I will never tell them they should lose weight, but if needed I will help them by supporting and encourage them. Im not planning to to have children but something I do with my youngest cousin is I just believe them. I was never trusted with my feelings, situations that happens or even with my dreams so I just stopped talking about nearly anything. I always make sure that them know I would believe, trust and listen to them no matter what I didn’t beat my children, or ever say “because I said so”. There was always a reason, explanation, etc. Understanding why something is wrong helps immensely in my opinion. My parents made me feel guilty for being bullied as a kid. They gave me the usual “advice” not to listen, to ignore the bullies, and to be the “bigger person” and I know that they probably didn’t believe what I told them happened daily. Frustrated by my crying and coming home with bruises and all that, sometimes they scolded me publicly and even hit me once or twice.

As a result, as an adult, I’m not able to seek help and my whole relationship with conflict and truth is twisted and massively fucked up. I don’t know if I’ll have kids, at this point it’s unlikely, but I swore ages ago that I won’t do the I’m Voting For the Outlaw and the Hillbilly 2024 American Flag Strong Hand T-Shirt and I will buy this same mistake with anyone ever, children or not, mine or not: if someone asks for help because they are being bullied, you listen to them and try to help. There is no point in trying to “teach them a lesson” or other nonsense like that, especially if they are children, ffs. I never made the mistake of telling my kid to be quiet (the adults are talking!) when confiding that I had been SAed at the age of 5. I also never made the mistake of confiding anything to those adults ever again. They never spoke to me about my education after high school. I made sure my kids knew their options loooong before they even got to high school. College or university, no other options. They both got educated and now say it never occurred to them that they could have refused. Now on to my grands. Paying lip service to tooth care. My teeth are fine, but in my fifties, only just 😂 i cant have children but i would NEVER neglect my child because my other children need a lot of my attention due to their all of their issues. I suffered with depression as a teenager. After my wife died I told my kids that within my power nothing further would change in their upbringing, their education or where we lived without we all decided we wanted it to (and them agreeing with it). I also told them they wete my highest priority and I would not get in to another relationship while they were minors. Both of them are doing well.
I was talked down and declared a useless nobody by my step-father for over a decade, what kicked me into depression… so I swore to me that, if I would ever have kids, I want them to know that they have my support and that I’m there to help them, if they need me (assuming I can help…). Parents essentially raised me to think we were in poverty and always yelled at me about the value and cost of things. And refused to let me handle money unless it was for school lunch.Which gave me so much anxiety over money that I would fret over meals during college and I would be afraid to eat, go out, but clothes, without having any concept of what budgeting wad beyond “save” and “don’t buy what you don’t need” and “use until you can’t anymore.”
It was such a scramble for me to figure out what to do with a paycheck. Still have money anxiety. Having to justify every purchase even a bag of chips is not healthy. I’m simply not having kids because I’m not fit to be a parent. As “successful” as my own parents are, they weren’t fit to raise me either. Control. One thing that helped my parents to stop controlling me was my principal telling them “would you rather have your kid do it and tell you, or not tell you and do it anyways?” Shut them up real quick.
