Felon disenfranchisement has a complex history rooted in the Jim Crow era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Laws enacted during this time were designed to suppress voter turnout among African Americans and maintain white political power. Today, the effects of these laws persist, with felony disenfranchisement laws disproportionately affecting minority communities.

Proponents of felon disenfranchisement argue that individuals convicted of serious crimes should not have the right to vote, citing concerns about public safety and the need to hold offenders accountable. However, critics argue that disenfranchisement perpetuates a cycle of recidivism by denying felons the opportunity to participate in society and make amends for their mistakes. Additionally, they contend that it undermines the principle of universal suffrage and the idea that all citizens should have a say in their government.
