The IM Voting Felon 2024 movement is a grassroots campaign advocating for the restoration of voting rights to individuals convicted of felonies. In the United States, over 6 million people are disenfranchised due to felony convictions, disproportionately impacting marginalized communities. This denial of basic democratic rights perpetuates systemic inequality and undermines the principles of justice and rehabilitation.

The origins of felon disenfranchisement in the US lie in the post-Civil War era, when Southern states sought to suppress Black voter participation. These discriminatory laws were codified in the Jim Crow system, which denied voting rights to people of color under various pretexts, including felony convictions. Despite subsequent civil rights legislation, many states have maintained these discriminatory practices, perpetuating a legacy of voter suppression.

Felon disenfranchisement has a profound impact on individuals, families, and communities. It erodes the civic fabric, undermines trust in the electoral process, and perpetuates stereotypes about people with criminal records. Research has shown that disenfranchisement leads to lower voter turnout, increased political apathy, and a disconnect between formerly incarcerated individuals and their communities.

The IM Voting Felon 2024 movement is part of a growing movement to restore voting rights to disenfranchised individuals. In recent years, there has been a bipartisan push to expand voting rights, including efforts to reform felon disenfranchisement laws. Several states have passed legislation to automatically restore voting rights to people with felony convictions upon completion of their sentences.
