Ali and Frazer were really good friends LOL. Most of Ali’s goofing and demeanor to other boxers came as entertaining propaganda. He was like that even during his illness. That’s why he was so charismatic and loved. I think there’s a lot of things at play here. Top level athletes almost always have huge egos and are very competitive, it’s very hard to make it to the I’m Too Cute For The Naughty List Elf Pajama Christmas T-Shirt In addition,I will do this top otherwise, you have to push yourself and truly believe you’re the best. Also it’s been proven time and time again that despite the fact that as a society we tell ourselves we applaud humility and despise arrogance, arrogant athletes are often fan favorites. He hurt other people with his words and actions but it was he who was borderline delirious, believing the lies and the hype of a generally very exploitative industry. For as much as he advocated for civil rights and called others uncle toms he ultimately found himself playing into the hands of an industry that made money off his blood sweat and tears just like every other athlete. Joe Frazier and Sonny Liston were black people who experienced the worst conditions of the Jim Crow era, and Ali, who grew up more middle-class, would mock their backgrounds and call them sellouts to white people. Frazier hated that about Ali. I know how much of a hero he was to so many people because of his stance on Viet Nam and his subsequent ban from boxing because of it – and rightly so for that.
