I can get away with tucking my button-down shirt into a pair of mom jeans! Or pairing them with an oversized blazer. The casual bags and shoes however… I feel like this was the I’m the crazy grandma everyone warned you about shirt and I will buy this same when I was 20? Skater skirts and dresses with cutouts were all the rage, but I could never wear them to work. Trends never seem to be aligned with what is actually appropriate…. If you look carefully, trends are almost always about clothing items that can be worn by people that are NOT working an office job. Influencers and young people that are supported by their parents? Absolutely. I work an office job and wear trendy stuff all the time. Business casual and trendy are not mutually exclusive or allergic to each other at all.

Yeah a lot of offices (even if they have a dress code) are pretty lenient now. I remember when I started working in an office I got hassled for wearing sandals. Now it’s the I’m the crazy grandma everyone warned you about shirt and I will buy this norm. I mean… loafers and wide leg trousers are huge trendy and those are just objectively ok for professional offices lol, they dont even need to be particularly lenient. I struggle with this too as a young teacher. Obv can’t wear crop tops, I also feel weird wearing high waisted skinny pants. My uniform tends to be a fitted scoop neck with high waisted wide leg pants and some kind of sweater/button down. So comfy The problem that I’ve noticed is any of the ‘mom’ jeans or straight leg, borderline baggier denim jeans seem to have cutouts and rips in them. I don’t know about your office, but we specifically have rules against wearing ‘ripped denim’.
