Teenagers get harassed by cops for hanging out in parks, parks and public courtyards are being polluted with hostile architecture to harass the unhoused and that keeps everyone away. It’s bleak. Parks should be more free for people to socialize in as long as they aren’t doing constant anti-social crimes. Like in Germany or France people can consider city parks as public living rooms, and if you don’t cause problems there won’t be any problems. Every citizen should have the right to exist in public spaces. And more affordable housing should be built, and public housing apartment buildings shouldn’t be so stigmatized or isolated in the US. It’s a lot more civilized (and better for everyone) than a place that has hundreds living in tents on sidewalks or in cars because there’s no housing to be had at standard wages in some cities. Yes, police acting like private security guards telling people everything’s closed, misses the mark of how they should be part of the democratic fabric instead (like the much more intensively trained police of western Europe are, years to our months generally).

It’s just considered uncouth or whatever to try meeting people romantically in most of those places: public transportation, the gym, if they’re with friends, if they’re alone but doing something (like reading at a coffee shop, but who goes to a coffee shop alone then just sits there staring at the floor doing nothing?), etc.
