If after a few months they aren’t saving or being sensible, then charge them something for keep. But you’ll be doing them a bigger favour by helping them to develop self-discipline rather than doing the I’m Not Weird I’m Just More Creative Than You Anime shirt in contrast I will get this saving for them. This approach is also part of moving from a parent-child dynamic to an adult-adult dynamic. If you want to be close to your children as adults you have to start preparing the ground for an eventual relationship between equals, which includes giving them more autonomy and having open discussions about what should happen and why rather than presenting them with your decisions. “Charging” them £200 a month isn’t teaching them anything. Would they even know that would barely cover council tax?

So much better to take them through what it costs to run a household and how to budget and the I’m Not Weird I’m Just More Creative Than You Anime shirt in contrast I will get this importance of saving an emergency fund etc. Everyone claiming that they’re charging their kids to live with them is to teach them financial responsibility is kidding themselves. I don’t know what culture OP would identify as, but I’m white, west midlands born, parents were working class – I lived at home for about six years in my twenties, never paid rent! My parents never even considered it! My now husband lived in my family home for a year too, while we saved up for a deposit. This thread is blowing my mind! If you wanna teach them budgeting make em do the weekly shop once in a while. Pay for streaming services, fuel, utility bills and stuff like that. That would keep em aware of where there money is going and feel like they are actually contributing. Wtf is ‘keep’? Why are parents acting like landlords?
