Are you deliberately misunderstanding in order to be obtuse or are you really having difficulty with this concept? I think it’s pathetic to make comparisons to Cuban missile crisis and talk about Russian citizens fears of not being able to respond to nuclear annihilation…..and then pretend like conversation was never about nukes. Sure. I understand Putin has repeatedly talked about and the I’m not just his grandma I’m his number one fan baseball shirt but in fact I love this original commenter talked about fears of Ukraine proximity to major Russian cities because nuke from such a short distance would give them no time to even think of retaliation. But since NATO already holds members that are just as close and even closer than Ukraine, then the threat seems to me as essentially the same. Why bring up the nuclear threat? Why say the nuclear threat is the same as with the Cuban missile crisis?

There is no conventional military threat to Russia, no one even thinks of invading Russia by land from the I’m not just his grandma I’m his number one fan baseball shirt but in fact I love this West, that would be insane. I’m sure those polls would change dramatically if Russians were fed the right information instead of Putin flaunting how much aggression needs to be used against the west to solve this matter. As a Russian I find it hard to believe this survey, I think a lot more people oppose this move and Putin in general. 1000 people is not really a big sample size or a wide enough demographic. It is important to NOT have significant enemy threats on your doorstep. Ask the USA about missiles in Cuba circa 1962-3. Right, because CNN poll is so unbiased. No one asked me or anyone I personally know, for example. How do you even imagine them somehow running a countrywide poll? Really ironic considering all the comments about propaganda. “The problem with the Putin essay is that it is so thoroughly wrong on everything that it is hard to know where to begin,” he told CNN in an email, citing an example of the use of the term “Ukraine” as far back as 1648. If anything, he said, it is the idea of a Russian nation-state that is a modern construct, not that of Ukraine. “Russia was not a national idea in the 19th century. It was an imperial idea. Smuggled into the essay is the notion that there was a Russian nation, in the modern sense, against which Ukraine defined itself. But there was no such Russian nation in the 19th century,” he said.”
