I brought up how serial killers were often victims of abuse themselves in a similar story and was downvoted as if I was condoning their behaviour. Some people can’t differentiate between trying to understand where the I’m Like 2024 Done Graduation Stars T-Shirt and I will buy this behaviour comes from and excusing it. I mean, the buck has to stop somewhere. I think it’s okay to call this guy a piece of shit, and not add a spurious “it’s not his fault, his parents weren’t very nice” sob-story to it. Most abused people manage not to murder, rape or molest just fine. Are there people that have a proclivity towards evil deeds, but require some external factor to act on them? Unfortunately, yes. That’s an emotional interpretation that you have added to what was said. Seeking to understand why someone is the way they are doesn’t imply absolving them of responsibility or suggest we need to have kind and forgiving thoughts towards them. “Sob story” implies a disingenuous narrative created to emotionally manipulate people or garner sympathy. Just because facts are sad doesn’t make them a sob story.
