I used to do the $1 to whatever it was that week, because I figured $1 isn’t too bad on top of $50 groceries or whatever, but I’ve seen this enough times to where it stuck with me and I just scoff at it now. “No thank you!” Never feels quite as nice as when you tell the multi billion conglomerate that you will not be giving them any additional money for whatever bullshit shtick they’re peddling today. (1) Yes the money is actually donated to the charity. (2) No, the company does not get a tax write-off for this. (3) No, you are not reimbursing the company money they already donated. Do some legitimate research people. Corporate entities (especially large ones) keep very tight books on all of these things and are frequently audited. That’s not to say that shady things don’t happen, but it’s a pretty safe bet that the money you round up with at the electronic register is going where it should. Also, the amount donated through these types of charities is crazy. Way more than if people were expected to find the charity, go to their website and make a donation. If you don’t want to donate, then don’t. If you feel guilty because they asked and you refused, that’s a you problem.

My girlfriend’s the If your attitude is sexist my response will be feminist shirt it is in the first place but kind to round up pretty often, or give to her church who turns around and does whatever they may or may not do with it. I’ve gotten her into the habit of just directly donating to these places herself whenever she feels so inclined now Nope. I don’t try to fix the world. I try to fix my neighborhood. I’m sorry Timmy 5 states over is starving. But I got Susy 3 streets over who’s starving too. And I laugh at these celeb “philanthropists”. Yeah they donate “a lot” of money but it’s pocket change to them while virtue signaling to convince people to donate money that they WILL miss. Though there are some celebs I do respect. Like Keanu Reeves who’s actually embarrassed he’s famous and lives considerably “cheaply” by comparison to his peers. I get hit with this at some places when i am checking, i always ask the cashier if the company matches donations. I have never received an affirmative reply.
