That doesn’t mean those people deserve to be homeless, quite the If You Want To Be Cool Just Be Yourself Cat Autism Awareness T-Shirt it is in the first place but opposite it becomes our moral responsibility to care for them. Some don’t want to be cared for, for sure, so you’ll never 100% eliminate homelessness, but we can absolutely do a much better job than now. People that work full time and are functional people have a hard time affording a place to live. There is not just 1 problem that can easily be fixed. We only have a series of bandaids. So many people think mental healthcare is magic. It only works if the individual puts in a lot of effort and even then it can fail. Not to mention, mental illnesses are just that, illnesses. Sometimes, the disease is stronger. It’s the most tragic outcome in physical illnesses because the body usually dies. Mental illness can kill a mind and leave the body living.

Yeah, “mental health” isn’t the If You Want To Be Cool Just Be Yourself Cat Autism Awareness T-Shirt it is in the first place but magic solution everyone thinks. It’s barely a band-aid. Because the problem goes a lot deeper than it can reach. It works if everyone who surrounds the person puts in the effort. Same for the next person, and the next, and so on. Eventually, from an exploiter’s point of view, there’s a cost/benefit analysis that says “this person needs X support to provide Y labor”, and anyone over that line gets abandoned. Obviously we still need to help the unhoused, but you can’t really justify it as “no really, this is good for capitalism” because it isn’t. It’s “just” a moral imperative. Well that would require them to care about the government making more money. They only care about themselves getting more money directly or vicariously through the party. That is why even though the government would make more money by legalising and taxing drugs, they remain illegal because prison lobbyists pay the parties to keep them illegal. They don’t have to foot the bill of paying for prison occupancy, the state does. The thing is unemployment benefits the ruling class. if there is enough jobs to go around then workers have bargaining power as they can take the job that is best rather than any job that they can get. I don’t think it’s that simple. I can’t see the government making any money if they are investing several 10s of thousands for each homeless person to have a job so they can contribute a few thousands back in taxes. Not to mention the money wasted on those that rescind, and there absolutely will be those, a lot, I presume. The problem is that in a capitalist system it is advantageous to maintain a certain amount of desperate unemployed people, as it allows companies to keep the minimum wage low since there will always be a more desperate person than you willing to work for less meaning the worker doesn’t have any bargaining power as they are easily replaceable.
