Algeria used to be a colony of France. The family speaks many languages but most of his siblings do know French. A lot of immigrants can go to France or Canada because of the language connections. Meanwhile people focus on the western evils of French colonialism, which was horrid of course, but there has also been an aggressive assertion of Arab culture trying to suppress the Kabyle/Berber culture, too. It’s not like just because it’s Arabic that means it’s the indigenous culture.
