Of course, abortion existed in those days, but “good” girls didn’t have them. They didn’t even TALK about them, though they regularly died after having them in unsafe unregulated circumstances. People mostly didn’t talk about unwed pregnancies, either. She was shipped off to a “home for unwed mothers” in a different state 800 miles away, so the neighbors in her small town wouldn’t talk. NOT an uncommon occurrence actually, especially in those days. She never told her other family members, including her parents, what really happened, either, or who the father was. She forever tried to atone for it too, for her otherwise kind and loving father thought she had brought shame on the family for being a wanton woman. She took the fall, instead of of accusing the family member. It became such a secret in her life she never told anyone, certainly not the man who became my father many years later, and only told me once I was well into adulthood. I still have never met my (half) brother. She had only begun to seek some psychological help for it when she died, more than 5 decades after giving birth to my brother. I was just telling a friend earlier today that if women would just talk about having their periods, having abortions, their rape experiences, everyday harassment stories, etc, these things would cease to be such taboo, and would make at least some people who see such issues in irreducibly simple terms (as the OP originally did), open their eyes and see how complex they really are, and that most people are deserving of tolerance & respect, in the least, for their personal decisions about their own bodies.
