If you haven’t seen Lil Nas X’s new single and music video, “Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” please do so ASAP. The clip has kept the I Will Never Ride Fast Again Never Shirt besides I will buy this Internet abuzz since it released on Friday. In the Christianity-themed video, the rapper navigates a fictitious world called Montero (his first name), in which he portrays Adam in the Garden of Eden, descends to hell on a stripper pole, and even gives Satan a lap dance. “I wanted to take bold religious stories and meanings, and flip them in my own way,” Lil Nas X tells Vogue. “This is probably the most important release of my life.” The video is a bold celebration of queer identity. On Instagram, he also alluded to his own coming out experience, and how that played into the video’s focus. When asked by Vogue if he’s been fascinated by religion in the past, he says, “I’d say more imprisoned.”One thing you may notice is that Satan, Adam, and the snake in the Garden of Eden are all extremely well-dressed. “We really went all out with this fashion,” Lil Nas X says. “We wanted to make it a bit more feminine than what I’m used to. I really wanted to step out of my comfort zone with this.” For the clothes, Lil Nas X worked with stylist Hodo Musa—who helped define his rhinestone rodeo look for “Old Town Road.” For his “Adam” look, Lil Nas X wore an Asher Levine “second-skin suit” that was adorned with more than 45,000 crystals. As a snake in the garden, he wore a custom organza and crystal Weslah corset. While playing the devil, the artist also wore a black leather caged jacket by Marta Miljanic, as well as special sneakers—called “Satan Shoes”—that he designed with Mschf, a Brooklyn-based label that revels in tongue-in-cheek fashion (they’re the ones who made Birkenstock-like shoes out of Birkin bags). As of today, you can buy the latter for $1,018. And there’s plenty more than meets the eye here. Mschf and Lil Nas X’s Satan Shoes are a devilish take on Nike’s Air Max 97s retailing for $1,018. (Nike does not endorse them and were not involved in the collaboration). Designing them was a new process for the rapper, who loves to wear sneakers, but doesn’t think of himself as a sneakerhead. “For me, it’s how comfortable it is, and second is the outside design—what’s unique about this and sets it apart,” he says. The shoes certainly have unique features: A custom metal pentagram adorns the laces, the sides are inscribed with Luke 10:18 (The bible verse reads: And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”) But the feature that has everyone talking are the soles filled with ink and one drop of human blood. The latter was, “sacrificed by the Mschf team,” according to a press release. Only 666 pairs were produced, and each one is numbered. “They’re all [special] edition pieces,” says Daniel Greenberg, Mschf’s head of strategy and growth. “We want everything we do to have a narrative, and to tell a story.”It’s not the first time Mschf has been inspired by religion: Its “heavenly” Jesus Shoes, also based on a Nike sneaker, were the sixth-most-Googled footwear of 2019. (The Satan shoes are a companion to those). “It seems every time we do a shoe, it takes over the Internet,” says Greenberg, who was attracted to working with Lil Nas X for a follow-up style. “We saw ourselves a lot in Lil Nas X. There’s some irony and satire to what we do—we want to get a rise out of people.” Indeed, the shoes were instantly controversial. Many, including the governor of South Dakota, think the drop of blood and bible verse is a step too far. In response, Lil Nas X posted a fake apology video, which cuts to the lap dance scene from “Montero.” Lil Nas X says this latest creative project—which is drawing much attention and controversy—opened his eye to a whole new world of possibilities in the world of design. “It’s a really fun branch to dip into [fashion,]” he says. “It’s always great to collaborate with different states of minds and stepping outside of music.” But don’t expect him to hang up his music career anytime soon: Lil Nas X is already on to making some more new music. “I already have my album finished, and I’m literally already planning sessions for this next week,” Lil Nas X says, teasing that his album is coming in the summer. “I need more and more ammo.”
I Will Never Ride Fast Again Never Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt
Last night, awards season continued on with the I Will Never Ride Fast Again Never Shirt besides I will buy this 52nd annual NAACP Image Awards, which aired live on BET and were hosted by actor Anthony Anderson (for the eighth year in a row). The evening honored the year’s best performances in film and television, specifically highlighting performances by people of color. Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page, Viola Davis, and Issa Rae all picked up trophies last night. On behalf of her late husband, Chadwick Boseman, Simone Ledward Boseman also accepted his posthumous award for outstanding actor in a motion picture, for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.Despite there being no red carpet for the event last night, stars still brought their fashion A-game for the televised affair. Both nominees and presenters embraced extremely glamorous looks. As is tradition for a virtual awards season, stars turned their backyards into photoshoot set to show off their looks. Leading the stylish pack was Regina King, who was nominated for best director for One Night in Miami. She wore a custom Oscar de la Renta frock that had a show-stopping bow on the back. It was a dress that makes an exit as well as an entrance. Custom was indeed the word of the night: Viola Davis—who won for outstanding actress in a motion picture for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom—also sported a colorful floral Duo Olowu gown that was made for her, finished with a peplum waist and floor-length skirt. Equally elegant was Cynthia Erivo, nominated for best supporting actress for The Outsider. She wore a Lanvin dress with a caged bodice and pleated pink skirt. Tracee Ellis Ross, nominated for outstanding actress in a motion picture for The High Note, also had one of the most thoughtful outfits of the night. In an Alberta Ferretti jumpsuit, she accessorized with bold jewelry by Tiffany & Co. x Elsa Peretti, her way of paying homage to the late jewelry designer, who was known for her sculptural pieces. On a more casual front, Yara Shahidi, nominated for outstanding actress in a comedy series for Grown-ish, also took part in the ceremony while wearing a monogrammed Dior loungewear suit. Looks like formal PJs are here to stay.Below, more of the best looks from the NAACP Image Awards.
