Biliary atresia is a condition in which the bile ducts that carry bile from the liver to the intestines are damaged or blocked. This blockage prevents bile from flowing, leading to liver damage and scarring. The exact cause of biliary atresia is unknown, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder. Symptoms of biliary atresia typically appear within the first few weeks of life and may include jaundice, pale stools, and dark urine.

The color green has become associated with biliary atresia awareness due to its connection to the liver. The liver is the largest internal organ and plays a vital role in metabolism, detoxification, and bile production. Wearing green symbolizes support for those affected by biliary atresia, raises awareness about the condition, and encourages early diagnosis and treatment.

Individuals with biliary atresia face a range of challenges throughout their lives. The most common treatment is the Kasai procedure, which aims to create a new pathway for bile to flow from the liver to the intestines. However, the success of the Kasai procedure varies, and some individuals may require a liver transplant later in life. Other challenges include chronic liver disease, malnutrition, and the need for ongoing medical monitoring and support.

Early detection and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes in biliary atresia. Parents should be aware of the symptoms of the condition and seek medical attention promptly if they notice any signs. The Kasai procedure is most effective when performed within the first 60 days of life. By raising awareness about biliary atresia and encouraging early diagnosis, we can increase the chances of a successful outcome and improve the quality of life for affected individuals.
