The interrogation room scene is more or less the I MAy Look Calm But In My Head I’ve Slapped You 3 Time Snoopy Shirt but in fact I love this interrogation room scene in The Dark Knight; villain reveals to Batman how much they are alike – in both movies this is a crucial turning point for Batman’s self-understanding; same plot point The master plan of both Bane in The Dark Knight Rises and The Riddler is to blow-up Gotham with a series of explosions around the city; for Bane it’s to isolate Gotham, for the Riddler it’s to destroy Gotham – in both cases the hero (Batman in this movie, Robin in The Dark Knight Rises) figures it out on their own but by the time they do its too late; same plot point Batman zip-lining up in the empty space between a spiral staircase to escape the police was the same scene in Batman Begins; club scene was initially more or less the same as the scene in The Dark Knight – both serve as a setting to show Gotham’s decadence and mafia control (also the added juxtaposition of Batman beating the shit out someone while barely anyone notices); Batman fighting in the dark with flashing lights from gun fire was the same in The Dark Knight Rises; overall mise en scene was very similar to Batman Begins I don’t understand why so much was lifted considering the Nolan franchise is not that old – not old enough to either be nostalgic about or directly lift material from.

Overall I thought it was… pretty obviously inferior to the I MAy Look Calm But In My Head I’ve Slapped You 3 Time Snoopy Shirt but in fact I love this Nolan franchise (not even in the same ballpark as The Dark Knight). I’m tired and so I’m not going to put the effort into describing all the problems there are with this movie but I will just say good god was the acting horrendous – the script certainly did not help. Also, Batman as basically a nonverbal angsty teenager was boring. It was an awesome film but I actually agree in this case that it didn’t need to be 3 hours. There’s plenty of films that have been neutered by runtime, but this isn’t one of them imo. I really liked it as a whole though. I think there was too much Gordon and too little Alfred but outside of that it was solid. As a long time fan though I was disappointed that the plot of him finding out his father wasn’t totally wholesome and dealing with that was kinda trite. Was hoping for something more complex maybe? The film felt really small, like every character had some family relation or history together. I feel like some of the negative reception to this film is a consequence of the MCU dominating the superhero movie space for so long. I’m sure lot of people went into this movie thinking there was gonna be a fight scene every 10 minutes and quippy one-liners throughout the entire runtime. Not to say those things are always bad, but I swear some people instantly write off an “action movie” when they actually take significant time to develop the story. It’s funny to me how a lot of die-hard MCU fans have been really critical of this slower, more character focused cloak and dagger movie when the best MCU movie is sort of similar (Winter Soldier).
