The cases are interesting, but they can be pretty intense and you really have no indication how bad it’s going to be until you’re actually called in. I’m that rare beast that’s done it twice. First time was pub brawls and minor drugs cases. Second time was an under age girl raped by a stranger. The process is interesting but be prepared to carry some trauma afterwards. I did a low level drugs import case about ten years ago. Getting ketamine through the post, and somehow the police had intercepted it, posed as the postman and then nicked the guy as he signed for the package. Pretty much an open and shut case based on the judge’s directions on the law concerned. What I found really powerful was the absolute seriousness that all the jury treated it with. We deliberated for a day and a half as we weren’t unanimous. The foreman was brilliant in managing the discussion. I hope that if I’m ever in the dock I’d get the same consideration.
