I hope the citizens affected by this tragedy sue the shit out of out of the train company and I hope the management involved with trying to cover it up gets sentenced. “Rage bait” prompts engagement, and for some reason companies are optimizing for this (I guess as you say it keeps people addicted and using/viewing the platforms/media and that increases ad revenue, probably. Incredibly damaging and short sighted, but there it is.) News media: blooper real – this one I had been struggling with. I wanted to understand: why are the news people always trying to make us feel so shitty? I interact with the world and the people around me every day and clearly people are suffering due to economic/financial issues, medical (incl. mental health) issues, loneliness and a lack of community, generally feeling a lack of agency. But still: good things happen in the world every day. I see people having good interactions. I see people learning from each other, making friends, falling in love, making art, developing new skills, reaching new athletic personal records, so on. Happens every day. So why does the news make me feel like shit every time I pay attention to it? And yeah: I get it now, I knew the media was complicit in hiding things like wage theft and basically controlled by corporate interest. It was clear. But why, I wondered, did they have to make us feel so fucking bad all the time? Now it is a little clearer, putting it into the same context as engagement = revenue. Short term gain at all costs.

They want to know why we are spiraling into a mental health crisis… it’s two factors 1) Everyone watches their friends be happier than they are on social media, and 2) The media is pushing majority rage bait and doom and gloom blooper reels for maximum revenue/viewership; The combination of these makes people feel inadequate and hopeless for the future. That is the root cause of the ongoing mental health crisis. People cite politicians, but politicians have always played their stupid elitist games. The one thing that has radically changed in the past thirty years has been how we consume media.
