The way my wife describes it, I’m not sure if they’re cheating on their husbands or are in open relationships. My wife came home one time and threw out what was very obviously a feeler to see how I’d react: “You know, all I have to do is put $40 away every week or so and I should have enough money to join them next year.” Fucking nope. It’s been about 2 years and we’re still trying to repair our marriage as a result, with limited success. I told her I was extremely hurt over the fact that she would even consider going to a foreign country, without me, with two women who go for the express purpose of having affairs. Said no at first, and she respected my decision. A few years later, I saw that she was starting to feel kind of… trapped? We talked about it, and I changed my decision. (For reasons I won’t necessarily go into unless someone thinks it could be helpful) If someone says they want an open relationship, they really mean, “I don’t want to be the bigger person and break up with you, so instead I’m going to coerce you into a relationship arrangement that will make you (for good reason) horribly jealous, but in which jealousy is taboo, so you will feel like you’re the problem and gaslight yourself into either breaking up with or settling as a secondary commitment to me.” It’s a win-win for the asking partner, and a lose-lose for the receiving partner. Me and my boyfriend started out poly and ended up with each other exclusively, so I doubt he would ever ask, but if he did, I would just walk away.
