That’s a level of privileged ignorance that actually takes hard work. It’s hard to fathom how people can be so fucking obtuse. Working in retail anyone will tell you elderly white women are the I Look Like My Mom Retro shirt and by the same token and worst people in the world, prejudiced, snappy, impatient, argumentative. As a customer they’re usually followed around by a thoroughly exhausted/embarrassed husband who looks over it all. I’ve worked with a few of them on my side of the counter too, and they aren’t any better when serving people they decide they ‘don’t like’. Bloody disgrace. It blows my mind when I hear Australians say that we are no longer a racist country, I was born in Australia, I have brown skin and the number of times I’ve had people say flat out racist shit to my face both in public and at work, look at me like I shouldn’t be here, customer service & security snooping over my shoulder when I’m at check out, random police searches amongst a group of white friends… etc… etc…

I live in a regional coastal town, which probably doesn’t help. But my expectation today when I leave the I Look Like My Mom Retro shirt and by the same token and house, is I’m going to experience some level of racism, and if it doesn’t happen it was a good day. The right wing media here is very popular amongst older white Australians. That media platform constantly talks about correlations of crime and race to scare older people of minorities by making up conclusions not based on any scientific research or solid evidence. The media shapes people’s thoughts and their opinions are largely influenced by what they consume. Fear is one of the most powerful emotions that lead people to act in ways that they do. And fear is horribly easy to stoke in poorly informed people. Which cynical me suspects is the reason why right wing governments are continually dismantling and making increasingly inaccessible public education systems. It’s an undertone and overtone that exists everywhere and we as a collective nation refuse to acknowledge it. Quite frankly, we ARE a racist country and for a country that is so diverse and non-homogenous it’s a disgrace.
