Even as life returns to something approaching normal in much of the I like guitars and books and maybe 3 people shirt and I will buy this U.S., it’s important to note that reproductive rights are—once again—under attack, with the Supreme Court considering a new Mississippi law that would limit abortions at 15 weeks. In Texas, the situation is even more dire, with Governor Greg Abbott recently signing a bill into law that would ban abortion as early as six weeks into a pregnancy (before many people even know they’re pregnant). All this makes the actions of Paxton Smith, the 2021 valedictorian of Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, all the more impressive. This week, Smith went viral for throwing out her prepared (and preapproved) speech and instead delivering an impassioned defense of abortion rights at her commencement ceremony.“In light of recent events, it feels wrong to talk about anything but what is currently affecting me and millions of other women in this state,” Smith said. “Starting in September, there will be a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, regardless of whether the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest. Six weeks—that’s all women get.” A TikTok clip of Smith’s speech was viewed more than 600,000 times on Twitter as of Wednesday, with many adults praising her courage:View on TwitterView on TwitterView on TwitterWhile Smith’s decision was certain to ignite controversy, the high school senior—who’s set to attend UT Austin in the fall—was armed with the support of her family. “It was something that she felt was important, and she had the nerve, determination, and boldness to put herself out there and say her piece,” Smith’s father, Russell Smith, told Lake Highlands Advocate magazine.

There’s been much discussion about the I like guitars and books and maybe 3 people shirt and I will buy this various vaccine incentives across the country, from free Yankees tickets in New York to a $1 million lottery in Ohio, and free donuts just about everywhere. Now, though, Washington State has come up with perhaps the most outré yet: a free marijuana joint, claimable when you get your COVID-19 vaccination. The promotion—which, perfectly enough, is called “Joints for Jabs”—will begin immediately and run through July 12, allowing weed retailers to provide customers who are 21 or older with a pre-rolled joint at their stores when they receive their first or second dose at an active vaccine clinic. (The promotion only applies to joints, not edibles, which is perhaps for the best; I can’t think of a worse place for edible paranoia to hit than a vaccine clinic staffed by members of the U.S. Army.)Vaccine incentives have only become more creative since vaccination rates began to decline in recent weeks, and while Washington’s might seem bizarre given the U.S. government’s history of aggressive anti-drug policy, it makes a weird kind of sense. Weed has, after all, been fully legalized in 17 states including Washington, New York, Illinois, and Arizona. Why not take advantage of that relatively recent change to get shots in arms?Washington State already boasts a 48.9% vaccination rate, one of the highest in the country, so at this point, it seems well worth it to use weed as a sweetener. If all it leads to is a whole lot of Washingtonians cavorting in public parks, high and vaxxed to the max, what’s the harm? I got my vaccine months ago, but I’d be lying if I said that part of me didn’t wish I’d been handed a discreet little joint along with my vaccination card.
