I mean we have a lot of land where we don’t grow anything already. Desalinization projects have been considered or even implemented in CA for a while. But there are two huge problems: All of the existing infrastructure pumps water from inland to coasts. You can’t just reverse pumps. Moving water from the coasts to the inland areas requires entirely new infrastructure. Desalinization is expensive and droughts are not continuous. Any momentum on desalinization projects halts when a drought breaks and people decide it isn’t worth the cost to keep going because maybe the worst is over. You have to remove the salt if you want to drink or farm with it. You wouldn’t need to for a pool, technically.

Here in California we care about how everyone feels. We don’t wan the criminals to feel bad, so we don’t stop them when they steal over and over from a store. We don’t want the homeless to feel bad or feel bad about not helping them, so we let them sleep under the bridges and park all along our industrial areas and parks. We don’t stop criminals stealing catalytic converters because hey at least they are supporting a failing recycling industry and the though of recycling makes us feel better, not actual recycling because we all know its a scam. We feel better paying some change for our plastic bags to force use to bring in multi-use bags, even though we never do. We would need to pipe water from a river where some fish may have less water to live in, and the fish will feel bad. Plus it would be like we are “stealing water” from another state or something even if we pay for it, and we are not thieves aside from the masses of thieves and slackers that live here. Also, we don’t want to make a water pipe go through someones wine field without unreasonable compensation anyway.
