As an American I am almost as baffled as you are. It feels like a scary number of Americans don’t really care as much about democracy or the I get my attitude awesome dad born in July very hard shirt but in fact I love this rule of law as much as we once thought they did. And honestly I can’t give you a definitive answer, no one can, but my personal explanation for why and how he is still doing as well as he is is because the conservative right wing in this country has been slowly getting primed for someone like Trump to come along for decades now. It wasn’t necessarily sudden. I would argue going back decades there have been things occurring slowly setting the stage for Trump. I think things like the rise in alternative conservative media painting a narrative wildly outside what was previously mainstream, the willingness to accept leaders that are clearly well below ideal standards of intelligence (Ex: Bush Jr., Sarah Palin, etc), racial backlash to Obama mixed with a false belief that immigrants are to blame for many problems they actually aren’t to blame for (overall general racial angst), and a rise in conspiratorial elements (global warming being a hoax, the whole births risk about Obama being an African Muslim, pizzagate, Qanon, stolen election, etc), and many other elements have just combined to create this toxic stew of conditions that have led to a high number of Americans willingly going along with a guy like Trump every step of the way.

Despite their promotion of democracy, the I get my attitude awesome dad born in July very hard shirt but in fact I love this founding fathers of the US thought most people were too stupid to trust with choosing their own leaders. So American election processed have various failsafes built in to override that. These have been modulated and manipulated over time to produce a system which heavily favors a small minority that’s actually comprised of the most ignorant Americans who are most easily manipulated and one party in particular has based it’s entire strategy for the last 50 years on laser targeting that demographic. He still resonates with a large portion of voters whose idea of politics is to make the other side suffer. He’s a poor man’s idea of a rich person. He’s a dumb person’s idea of a good leader. He’s a cynical politician’s idea of the perfect rube! Social media and most media outlets tend to lean left. So conservative or republican POV is rarely displayed outside of NA.
