If the person seems like a dodgy bastard who’s going to cheat you out of it or suddenly pull the sympathy card on you – don’t do the job. It’s not worth the loss of time, assets and stress along with the potential character assassination conducted by them depending on your trade. If you’re unsure or need the contract – ask for a down payment of 50%. If they can’t pay that, then they’re probably not willing or able to pay for the work that you’re doing. If they complain, you justify it by saying it is for equipment / expenses that’ll be incurred during the work that you’re doing for them. But for the love of fucking god do the fucking job to the best quality otherwise it makes your life (and other sole traders) absolute fucking hell.
