It reminds me of the ol “Nearly 1 in 4 homeless people are women” headline. So the majority of homeless people are men. K. For reference, 24% of immigrants from east Asia (mostly China) regret moving to the USA according to Pew. So the 1 in 5 number is apparently typical. I tried to look for statistics that were closer to the North/South Korea situation, but it is hard to search for these polls. Anyway, it always annoys me when headlines throw out these numbers without a baseline to compare with (is 20% high? apparently not). 81.5% to be precise. But you are right, it’s great numbers. It does show there could be some improvement made to help the transition. Although I’d imagine loss of family could never really be fixed…. Except the people who decide to escape from North Korea must’ve already hated the country to risk their lives to escape in the first place. Selection bias right there, and 20% doesn’t look that good after all. Maybe if we were to randomly pick people from N Korea and put them in S Korea stats would look a lot different. I mean it’s news because it’s 20% is still a big number considering the difference in freedom and progress from one country to the other
