I was living in Chicago and the CTA machines would give you those as change when you purchased as CTA card. I wish I would have kept a few. The only good thing to ever come of the Sacagawea dollar was the time someone put them into a change machine instead of quarters and and I magically turned 5 dollars into 20 dollars. I used them all the time. I think the biggest reason for them not working was that cash registers didn’t have a place for them. We really do need to switch to dollar coins at some moment, truth is cash is going to continue for at least another few generations. The Washingtons are always so fucking beat up when you get them. Where I lived there were only two places to get these: from a bank or a post office. And the banks would only give them to people who asked for them. Most people probably never saw them.
