Kaling is now one of Hollywood’s most sought-after creators, but it’s fascinating that the I Am Andrew I Can Do All things Through Christ Who Strengthens Me Shirt moreover I love this work that birthed her career essentially emerged from an activity that countless women will be able to relate to: shooting the shit with her best friend. For their part, Wiig and Mumolo—who cowrote the screenplay for 2011’s Bridesmaids—have been friends for decades, and it shows. In a different era, Barb and Star could have been a Saturday Night Live gag or, at best, a moderately well-funded web series, and it’s exciting to realize that we might finally be developing something like a female taxonomy of inside jokes. Is Barb and Star a perfect movie or even a perfect comedy? Oh, certainly not—it’s arguably too long, and the I Am Andrew I Can Do All things Through Christ Who Strengthens Me Shirt moreover I love this plot is near incomprehensible at times. But that’s partly what’s so great about it. Wiig and Mumolo permit themselves the kind of at-length, borderline-ridiculous comedic indulgence that’s still rare among female creators in Hollywood (women of color in particular), and while two women entertaining themselves isn’t necessarily radical, it’s definitely refreshing.
