He’s from some part in UP. I myself am a mumbai guy. Im just clarifying that if a mumbai person uses the word maybe he doesnt know that its insulting to south Indians. Its just too common to say the word, especially amongst the working class marathi people who migrate to mumbai from konkan. Even my Grandmother uses words like “Madrasi family” or “Madrasi uncle/aunty/ajji/ajoba” to address her tamilian friends. And Matunga area(know as Mini Madras due its huge population of Tamilians) literally has gated communities called madrasi padas. So if some random person from mumbai comes to u and asks “Are u madrasi?’ Pls dont get offended and consider a balanced approach. Also just to clarify i am a marathi speaking guy from from maharashtra and not a northie so that u guys donot pounce on me and start calling me a vadakkan etc. Im also not justifying racist behavoiur of the manager, I was just trying consider a possibility whether the person mentioned above was unaware of the fact that the word is insulting to many people.

Never knew it was offensive. I’m tamilian who grew up in Chennai while my mother(also tamil) grew up in Mumbai. She (a tamilian raised in mumbai ) who moved back to Chennai after marriage, called me a madrasi because I grew up here as a joke. Didn’t find the joke funny but I certainly didn’t know that it was offensive either. I recently shifted to Mumbai and my manager is also from UP and he is very nice. Then again maybe OP’s sensibilities(and others not exposed to this idea from Mumbai) might be different and the manager’s intent also matters. If possible talk with the guy to understand his intentions , no need to get him fired and all.
