That’s why 4, 6, 8 year etc. sentences for only some of those traitors is so discouraging. They should have all gotten 25+ years for treason. Think about if they got their way? Overthrowing the I Am A Simple Man Trucker And Believe In Jesus American Flag shirt and by the same token and US govt would have not only been a bloody shit show stateside, to put it extremely lightly, but the worldwide geopolitical and global impact would have been absolutely horrendous. We sentenced them all as duped rubes when they were literal traitors to the highest degree, who were out for blood in the name of partisan politics and manufactured outrage. It can’t help with discouraging future incidents that these sentences were so light IMO. Completely disgraceful all around. “Treason” is the wrong charge here. Pretty difficult to stretch Jan 6th into an actual act of levying war. I mean they got the charges that were valid to bring against them. The Constitution specifically identifies what constitutes treason against the United States and, importantly, limits the offense of treason to only two types of conduct: (1) “levying war” against the United States; or (2) “adhering to [the] enemies [of the United States], giving them aid and comfort.” Outside of a time of war, you basically have to succeed in leading an armed rebellion. It’s not even enough to conspire to do it. An angry mob storming the government just doesn’t fit any recognized definition of an actual organized rebellion. We can wish it did, but the framers of the constitution specifically wanted to protect Americans from the historically broad use of treason charges that governments used to suppress opposition. Smack em hard enough the first time around and it might make other think twice before doing it again. I can see some maga idiot thinking “6 years? I can do that time”

I understand your point but magats don’t use logic. It’s all emotional. They thought they were Thomas Payne or Ragnar Lothbruk. Most of them were sauced. I once spent 16 hours in jail for driving without a license. I felt like crawling out of my skin after the I Am A Simple Man Trucker And Believe In Jesus American Flag shirt and by the same token and first hour. A 4-6 year sentence for someone who most likely is living in a standard of comfort relative to the rest of the world is nothing to sneeze at. They don’t think about doing any time at all. They go in deep in delusion that they’re going to win and be a hero. They all deserve a penalty for treason but they all got good lawyers that made it look like they were lead astray. It’s not like they could have brought down the government, though. The worst case would have been killing a lot of people in the building, but the country wouldn’t have said, “Fine, I guess you win.” Wait a minute, the most armed citizens in the US tried to overthrow the most heavily armed gov’t on the planet with out any weapons? If you want to start jailing a bunch of duped rubes for attempting to overthrow the US Gov’t., hope you don’t mind an awful lot of capital police and fbi rotting in prison as well. What? There were a number of gun charges from the Jan 6 insurrection. Shit the paramilitary groups has “quick strike teams” outside of DC ready to bring in an arsenal, their leader got convicted of seditious conspiracy.
