I mean, you’d pay for the device, the drinks that come out of it, and I’m assuming someone comes and replaces the consumed things. This makes me think of hitch hikers guide to the galaxy- “He had found a Nutri-Matic machine which had provided him with a plastic cup filled with a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.” I think a lot of people are missing the point of this machine. Ultimately, it’s goal is to remove the usage of single use plastic across the board. No need to buy a 12 pack of coke with all the cans when you can create it with this machine. Additionally, it’s NOT just a sodastream as it uses the different flavinoids to create the drinks. It doesn’t dispense syrup, it dispense ascorbic acid, turpenes, different flavinoids, including caffeine or vitamins into your drink. Infinitely customizable. The pay per drink is questionable for sure, but its no different than if you were to just buy cans from the store, you still pay per drink it’s just the consumer attitude about it that is different.

All in all, I actually think it sounds great. And that it is just a Sodastream because even with all those things it “dispenses”, it is incapable of making anything other than flavored, sweetened, and carbonated water. This device is SLIGHTLY more customizable than a Sodastream or next-gen Coke machine. The idea that version 1 will only be improved upon flies in the face of hard food science. Don’t you think if it was POSSIBLE to make something that could be combined with water to make wine or a cocktail that it would already be available? Spoiler alert: it’s not. Did you…. read the article? That’s literally the plan. It can make soda, coffee, water, alcoholic mixed drinks, beers, wines, anything you can think of. It doesn’t exist yet because they’re literally the ones building it, someone has to be first, no?
