Wilhelm’s journey began in rural North Carolina, where he developed his unique knuckleball technique by experimenting with rocks and walnuts as a child. Despite his unorthodox style, Wilhelm’s pinpoint accuracy and deceptive movement soon caught the attention of professional scouts. In 1944, he signed with the New York Giants, embarking on a remarkable career that would span more than two decades.

Throughout his career, Wilhelm experienced both triumph and adversity. He was a member of the 1954 World Series champion Giants and the 1966 World Series champion Baltimore Orioles. However, he also endured multiple injuries, including a broken left ankle that nearly ended his career in 1957. Undeterred, Wilhelm rehabbed tirelessly and returned to the mound, eventually becoming one of the most successful pitchers in MLB history.

Wilhelm’s greatest legacy lies in his longevity. He pitched in the majors for an astonishing 21 seasons, despite being considered undersized and unathletic. His incredible arm strength and impeccable control allowed him to continue pitching effectively well into his forties. In 1972, at the age of 49, Wilhelm became the oldest pitcher in MLB history to record a save.
