(Cats are a different story – support your local TNR programs pls) Ethical breeding keeps animals healthy, happy, and in the hands of capable owners. It’s a lot harder to get a puppy from a breeder if you clearly have no intentions of properly caring for it, but anyone who plans on smacking their untrained dog in the face every time it barks can pick up a dog off Craigslist of Greenfield Puppies or with no problem. Ethical breeders also typically breed at a financial loss, because all the health testing & vet care required is fucking expensive. Backyard breeders and mills are the ones you see aiming to make a profit, because doing that is literally not possible if you’re doing all the things required to make sure your animals are healthy.

We don’t even have dog overpopulation where I live. They have to ship in dogs from other states to meet the demand for adoptable dogs, and we have a lot of dodgy rescues that are just actually buying dogs from puppy mills. Which is why I waited A YEAR to get my puppy from a good breeder — it’s not a super common breed and they have small litters, so my options were basically either be patient or not get this breed. I’m glad I stuck it out because he’s perfect. I do notice that pet overpopulation varies a lot by area. In my area we have SO many shelter dogs, but the cat sections are empty kennels on empty kennels – my boyfriend recently adopted a cat and had to visit three shelters before he found one that was compatible with what he wanted (literally just an adult cat who’s good with other cats) and didn’t already have multiple adoption applications put in.
