This is a big benefit that most restaurants would not be able to achieve on their own. It is a brand new sales channel. Also the Hot as fcuk text shirt besides I will buy this costs that you mentioned, such as rent, are something you would already pay as a restaurant. Swiggy/Zomato are giving you a new sales channel and the strength of your product will determine how you negotiate the revenue sharing terms with them. The food industry existed before swiggy/zomato came in the picture so I am not sure why you are trying to sound alarmist and if you don’t like their terms, you can simply go off their platform and think of stratgies to compete on your own. E.g. many street vendors are not on these platforms but still have a steady business. Exactly, OP seems to mostly struggle with established branded food chains and their pricing. Which is true for any new business in any industry. It’s the late-comer disadvantage. Not exclusive to hospitality.

It seems like an uphill battle for new restaurants who lack visibility and reach; and it’s the Hot as fcuk text shirt besides I will buy this cost they have to pay to be viable. The OP wonders why the channels are not formally regulated. They charge for what they offer. For OP, the order volume and outsourced delivery makes up for the revenue cut, else he wouldn’t be playing the game. It is not supposed to be a level playing field. The apps don’t offer that to the restaurants. They promise delivery and reach in exchange for a cut and they deliver on that. If the apps want to charge more money for providing better reach, they are completely free to do that. And well, restaurants are a low margin business with or without delivery apps and the rules of the game have changed now. Customer convenience comes at a cost to the restaurants and OP should make peace with that fact. Government regulation is an entirely different beast altogether and it’s not like that’s a surefire way to fix this. There’s an equal chance it may go downhill for OP.
