My FIL got an incredible rescue Anatolian from a breeder… it’s the Hixson high school alumni shirt it is in the first place but calmest, nicest, best tempered dog I’ve ever met. His only issue is food guarding which stems from the people who gave him up… just don’t reach for his bowl while eating. He also got a puppy from the same breeder, with health, bloodlines etc all perfect and it’s a fucking hyperactive idiot still even at 3 years. Oh for sure, I definitely should mention that my friend took his responsibilities as a dog owner seriously from day one! And my sister has been through the gamut of dogs in her life- some shelter mixes, some older or puppies, some “purebreds” from breed specific rescues, and recently a definitely pure bred Great Dane because she was lucky enough to have an in with the foster. She’s an excellent dog owner, but all have had some “issue,” twice severe with bad outcomes, often times hilarious (like the purebred that was supposed to be really smart but was so very dim, bless her). But she has the same attitude- do your best to train them and give them what they each individually need because that’s what you signed up for!

They’re like kids – they have their own personality and mindset, you can train all you want but a big happy idiot dog is gonna do big happy idiot dog things. It’s a commitment to loving them and taking care of them… it’s actually why I don’t have one at present because I don’t have the Hixson high school alumni shirt it is in the first place but space or time to dedicate the love and care one would need… some day though. Yeah, I do actual work with my dogs, and I virtually always get them from breeders for exactly that reason. A well-bred working dog is much more of a known quantity in temperament, health, etc. Considering I’m a softie and hate rehoming dogs that wash out of training, it’s pretty important to me that I get it right the first try. There are some exceptions. Like my current SAR dog is actually a mutt I adopted as a puppy after her previous owner went to prison for making and selling meth, lol. I hadn’t planned on doing that with her, though. I just adopted her because I was living out in a rural area at the time and had plenty of room and liked her, and I train all my dogs on scent work just because it’s a fun time. She showed a ton of aptitude for it, and I did get her a genetic health test too which did not reveal anything sketchy. Not a guarantee but it helps a bit. But she’s the first rescue dog I’ve actually been able to get successfully certified for SAR work, and I have tried before. When it comes time to retire her sometime in the future, I will probably go back to a breeder for my next prospect.
