Hmmm you got your animals mixed up. Cane means dog. Dio cane means dog god. There’s another blasphemous expression, Dio porco, meaning pig god. It depends hahaah In Sicily we say “Matri mia” or “Matri” (Matri means mamma) when we’re shocked or surprised, but mostly we use “Madonna” or “Madoooo” Literally everyone says Madonna! Sometimes when my FIL sneezes he says ‘in culla zia’ta’. I’ve probably butchered the Hippocampus it’s not a dad bod it’s a father figure shirt in other words I will buy this spelling of his dialect, but it translates as ‘up your aunt’s ass’. I overheard some Italian teenagers talk in a theme park and one guy said mama mia. I laughed becuase I thought this was a steriotype not something they actually say. Yes. I was on a train from Florence to Genoa, and it took off before an older woman could get to her seat, she stumbled and said it. My Italian family never said it, too busy constantly telling each other they were full of shit. This is why I never went to Italy. If I want to see angry Italian people shouting at each other, I’ll just go to a family reunion here in the US. I’ve heard italian americans say “mama mia” in a usual half-joking kind of way but I’ve genuinely never heard it being said seriously. In Italy I have heard it, usually from older women, quite a few times in a more serious manner. Really late to this and not going to scroll down but please, please tell me that somebody replied “here we go again” !
Hippocampus it’s not a dad bod it’s a father figure shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt
Yes, “mamma mia” is common for Italian’s. My father and his parents are 100% Italian. I hear my grandparents say it all the Hippocampus it’s not a dad bod it’s a father figure shirt in other words I will buy this time instead of “oh my” or “wow.” In Italian, words have only one pronunciation possibility and you have to pronounce exactly as written, so there are no cases in which you don’t pronounce the final letters, you don’t read the doubles or you change the letters Is this a joke? My grandma and grandpa came from Italy “on the boat”. Not once did they ever say that or any of their family. Maybe OP wanted to know about, you know, current actual Italians rather than people who left 60 years ago or whatever? Read it again. My grandparents who were born in Italy and their kids—I have been with them all since birth. They have never uttered that phrase. Get it? As an Italian, this is a very big stereotype, I never heard that combination of words in my life used in any kinda of context Yea I think they do. My Italian friend does it when she’s yelling at her mum. I think she says Dio!!! Quite a lot which means god We say it as much as English speakers say “omg”, without a super Mario accent (typical of Americans with Italian ancestry) and without making the famous hand gesture (which in Italy means wtf, it’s not used randomly)
