I studied Russian in college and spent a summer (2007) there at the Hello Darkness My Old Friend Solar Eclipse April 8 2024 Sun T-Shirt moreover I love this university of Moscow. Pretty much all of my classmates and I had a love/hate relationship with the country. The history and art are top notch, and people are very friendly if you get to know them. BUT I have never been anywhere so openly hostile to foreigners, and Americans especially. Like—there are plenty of racists and xenophobes in America, but I have rarely, if ever, heard anyone just yell “stupid foreigner” to a random person on the street. Not someone they interacted with who didn’t know the local customs, just random people walking down the street. This happened to us regularly. I was a third year Russian student, so I knew enough conversational Russian to get around. People there were absolutely obstinate talking to us. They often pretended not to understand us while we spoke Russian. Hey, we were learning, so maybe our pronunciation was so bad they couldn’t understand literally anything we said, but I got suspicious when I tried to order tiramisu and the server said she didn’t understand. For the record tiramisu in Russian is…tiramisu.

My absolute favorite though, was when a friend and I were at the Hello Darkness My Old Friend Solar Eclipse April 8 2024 Sun T-Shirt moreover I love this post office and we wanted to mail some post cards. We hadn’t learned words related to the post office so we asked someone, in Russian, if they could help. He was a nice gentleman and said he didn’t speak English but he would ask someone else to help. He turned and asked some other lady, to which she responded, in Russian that we could understand, “oh yes, I speak English, but for them I do not.” My point to all this is that this was my experience in 2007, and I can only imagine how much the perception of Americans to Russians has declined even more in recent years. I think it’s fucking HILARIOUS that these goddamn nimrods thought they could go over there and be welcomed as good ol’ Christian defectors or whatever, and that they would receive any help from locals in trying to set up basic services and accounts. I hope they continue to be treated exactly as they deserve.
