In my case, I literally didn’t know it was reserved for it. I knew people referred to it as the Heavy Mental Roses Shirt and I will buy this passing lane, but thought it was legitimately the lane you are supposed to be in if you are going above the speed limit. The reason you can use it as the passing lane is because it’s the fast lane. Holy shit this is like blowing my mind right now My great aunt who died a few years ago once said that she loves driving in the left lane because it’s just wide open road in front of her – AKA she’s driving slow so everybody is passing her on the right. But she could create wide open road ahead of her by driving slow in the cruising lane and allowing everyone to pass in the passing lane… I only had one person tell me the truth about why she was doing it. She said she was frightened to be in the center lane because she wasn’t good at keeping her lane. She couldn’t hide in the right lane because she was constantly being surprised by people slowing down to turn or take exits.

The answer therefore is obvious to me: Every few hundred meters have a sign with a picture of a snake, a spider, or a person of color overhanging the Heavy Mental Roses Shirt and I will buy this left lane. Yup, it’s generally this: they’re just ignorant, not malicious. Sometimes they are malicious (“you shouldn’t be going faster than me and I am righteous in blocking you”) but that’s the exception in my opinion. This is the most common one I have seen, to an extent. In a way, I understand it, before I drove that’s how I thought it worked. When you are driving long distances, the left lane is nice because you don’t have to move over for traffic merging on. Now that I know different it’s the opposite. The center lanes are the best for long distance travel, and if you stay in the left lane you will eventually have someone riding you ass, and will most likely be constantly moving over because you are in the way. The worst are long distance truck drivers who feel this way.
