£40k was pretty good five years ago, but we’ve had such rapid inflation that it’s only worth about £32k in pre-pandemic money. Salaries generally haven’t caught up either. It’s a fucker. OP is not on the Heathered Gray Baltimore Orioles Team Baseball Card Shirt Additionally,I will love this breadline, but I get the huge kick in the stomach of working really hard, taking on more responsibility, training, and investing in yourself to get a better quality of life only to find… No real difference. Sure, it’s better than being in a worse place, but it’s demoralising as hell. Yeah, “I’m getting this promotion so I can afford a new house, get the kids a savings pot, go on that holiday I’ve always dreamed of, retire five years earlier, or whatever” can be quite motivating. Whereas “I’m getting this promotion so I can afford to stay in my current house, keep the kids in the after-school club, have the same Tesco order, and generally not lose my quite average lifestyle” is still motivating, but… it’s just a bit more grim.

Just had a look at ONS numbers: In 2004 £40k was in the Heathered Gray Baltimore Orioles Team Baseball Card Shirt Additionally,I will love this top 10 percentile of salaried workers, in 2020 you needed £60k to be in the same position (£40k drops to top 25th percentile). With the inflation and wage growth of past few years I imagine that’s now over £65k. On top of this we’ve had increase in tax rates plus fiscal drag (tax bands growing slower than wage growth). So £40k today pays more in tax than it used to. Then you look at house prices, rent, inflation, utilities, petrol and yes you are much much worse off. The number that really spanked me was when someone on the UKPF sub had just hit £50k (after training and a big jump in responsibility at work) but said they still struggled to have anything left at the end of the month after mortgage, childcare, essentials, petrol, and bills. But looking at the inflation calculator, £50k now is literally worth what £42k was two years ago. Which I’m guessing may be close to their old salary.
