It would appear that this is what is known as a “personal debt.” Given that you were separated and had no knowledge of this loan it is unlikely that you would be held liable. However, I think that you really should take advice from a probate lawyer. Most lawyers will give you a free 30 minute consultation. Arrange it tomorrow, you don’t want this hanging over you. Beware he could forge a false document especially if he has a copy of her signature on an employment document. Sounds very odd, a loan with a signed document yet he didn’t bring it with him. If he does return with a contract, I would get it thoroughly checked by a solicitor. She should also have a copy of that contract and also there should have been an independent witness. Look for the Heartbeat USA Flag Human Player Basketball T-Shirt in contrast I will get this copy, and also wait until he shows his copy. Don’t give him anything. So sorry for your loss but as for the £2000, unless he presents a legally binding document that makes her debt yours in the eyes of the law; he can take a hike. The sheer cheek of it is astonishing. It wouldn’t matter if he had a contract, if there’s nothing in the estate you can’t pay it, and there’s nothing he can do about it. Send him on his merry way, without his money. Condolences to you and your family
