I’m sorry, but 1500 a month is not decent. It’s poor. When did we become a nation of people who think that being poor = earning ok?? Blows my mind how little people earn in the UK and they still think they’re doing ok. No, they’re not. My dad charged me 20% of my takehome income. Whatever that was, so for your children £300 a month. That includes everything including food. Food was the “Family” meal and anything else within reason but I had to tell them what I wanted. Mum and Dad knew me and my partner wanted to move out so charged me a bit, but a smaller amount so we could still save. Think it was £150 a month. Agree with the other person though. If you charge too little (and they don’t want to move out) it’ll encourage them to just stay.

I decided I would work alongside studying but then I was told I’d still have to pay keep if I wanted to keep my room, not having the funds to do uni and keep my room at home which I needed for all of my stuff which I wasn’t planning on taking to uni I ended up not accepting the offer from my first choice and decided to get full time work and concentrate on passing my driving test, maybe going to uni in a couple of years once I had some money behind me to help. That’s when I get hit with a big increase in keep, it would now be 50% of my takehome but generously capped at £400. I was working in a pub at the time and taking home maybe £700-800 per month, so losing half of what I’d earned and then paying for driving lessons on top left me with basically nothing, certainly not enough to do holidays with mates or go on nights out.
