They take those donations and apply them against what they owe in taxes. They are given in the Happy Thanksgiving Thanksful For My Tribe Pumpkin Halloween T-Shirt But I will love this name of the corporation, not your name. I never, ever donate through a store. And even worse, a lot of the stores are now moving to self-checkout. So they deny someone a job, and I have to not only pay higher prices for food, but I have to check it out myself. Walmart is the worst with this. No one works there anymore, just me. I like self checkout. My local grocery store stopped packing bags when we had to shift to bringing our own instead of using disposables. At that point the clerk is basically useless. I can wave my items over the scanner faster than they can. Self checkout made room for more checkout bays, shorter lines, and the chance for me to pack things so they don’t break. Charities work with stores to set up these campaigns. They are a major source of income for these organizations. The charities get 100% of the money raised, and the business gets no tax incentive. You, as the one donating, can claim the donation. The company gets some PR.

Not all charities are amazing or are ones you support. But please don’t spread misinformation that will make people decline donating on those false premises. They want you to donate $20 so that they can donate 15c of that to the Happy Thanksgiving Thanksful For My Tribe Pumpkin Halloween T-Shirt But I will love this cause, pocket the rest for “administrative fees”, then tell the world how charitable they are. When a store says “do you want to donate a dollar to [named charity] today?” I would assume there are laws in place that require the full dollar to be paid to that charity. What that charity does with the money is another story, but I don’t think they would be legally allowed to say “do you want to donate a dollar to charity” and then donate any less than that $1 to the charity. The big charities are the ones who take a chunk as “admin fees” but the store doesn’t do anything but pass it from you to that charity.
