Anselmo joined Pantera in 1987, bringing a raw and aggressive vocal style that complemented the band’s punishing sound. Their album “Cowboys from Hell” (1990) marked a breakthrough, showcasing Anselmo’s signature growl and screaming. Pantera’s subsequent albums, including “Vulgar Display of Power” (1992) and “Far Beyond Driven” (1994), further cemented the band’s status as metal giants. Anselmo’s lyrics, often filled with nihilism and anger, resonated with a generation of fans.

After Pantera’s demise in 2003, Anselmo co-founded Down, a supergroup featuring members of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, and Crowbar. Down’s music explored a different side of Anselmo’s vocal abilities, with haunting melodies and introspective lyrics. The band’s debut album, “NOLA” (1995), became an instant classic, showcasing Anselmo’s versatility and the band’s unique blend of sludge metal and blues rock.

In 1993, Anselmo formed the experimental project Superjoint Ritual, later known as Superjoint. The band’s music was a return to the raw, primal sound of Pantera’s early days, with Anselmo’s vocals sounding more feral than ever. Superjoint Ritual released a series of critically acclaimed albums, including their self-titled debut (1997) and “Caught Up in the Gears of Application” (2002).
