I used to think Putin was essentially a mob boss who happened to run a country instead of a neighborhood. That all he and his cronies really cared about was power and getting rich off the Happiest Nana On Earth Mickey Shirt also I will do this spoils of “running” a government. 1 – He genuinely believes Russia is defined as “Greater Russia” i.e. the old Soviet Bloc, and he is currently engaged in a war for Russia’s survival 2 – He is motivated by the “embarrassment” of losing the Cold War and is after vengeance against “Atlantia” (US and UK). Anything that hurts the West/NATO, particularly US/UK, counts as a “win” for Russia, even if Russia does not appear to be a direct beneficiary in our eyes. I think if Putin really did have the same motivations as a hyper capitalist oligarch (a mob boss in a suit) he wouldn’t have waged a full scale invasion. I think he would have just gripped Crimea and the eastern most provinces and called it a day. And certainly once the sanctions hit he would have changed his tune. But I don’t think he’s motivated by $$$. It’s something else. I think he used the oligarch structure to gain and wield power, but I don’t think that’s what flips his switch, and at this point he’s probably installed a cadre of “yes men” and fellow True Believers around himself and in the positions of authority in his country.

And I think ultimately Putin has the real power (the will and ability to use violence, the resources of the state, propaganda) and the oligarchs would get rid of him if they could but are much more scared of him than he is of them. oh no this isn’t just oligarchs. this is Russian imperialistic fascist ambition. “just about money” narrative is an attempt to whitewash this
