Go with the Hakeem Olajuwon Nigerian-American former The Dream Basketball Legend T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this job you enjoy more. Work / life will always be a challenge, but you want to enjoy both if possible. Take the $200k job for 2 years and then lateral to another $200k job with a great WLB. You’ll be way happier coasting at that level than significantly less. I’ve been thinking recently about what makes me feel rich. Previously I would purely chase money and do as much as I can stomach to get better and get promoted more. Now that I am in that 90-130k bracket (in Canada), I’ve sort of realized that I only want work to be part of my life, and the way I feel rich is by having time to watch tv, cook, bake, play games, socialize, etc. Essentially, having a slightly larger house and a more expensive car does not make me feel rich, but having a job I enjoy enough that leaves me time to pursue my own hobbies, however pointless they may be, they make me happy and make my life feel meaningful.

I made this exact decision a few years ago. Well, I was working closer to 70 hours per week but the Hakeem Olajuwon Nigerian-American former The Dream Basketball Legend T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this money was not worth the exhaustion and anxiety. I nearly halved my salary but I’m much happier still in my new job I currently make approximately 120-150k/yr on a rotating schedule. The work/life balance isn’t terrible, but it’s working a lot of hours and then having several days off in between. It works great for taking trips with the family, but it makes it impossible to coach sports or spend meaningful time with the family on a regular basis. Lots of people do the shift work long enough to get comfortable (pay off debts, build nice house, build savings, ect) and then move to an “off-shift” job so that they can work 4 x 10’s and have every weekend off….be home for dinner. The average income drop to go off-shift is about 20k or so. I don’t see many people regretting their decision. You eventually get to a point where time is more valuable than money, but everyone is different. I plan on eventually going off-shift in a few years when the kids get a little bit older.
