You can speculate all you want, but the Gustav Forsling Swedish professional ice hockey defenceman for the Florida Panthers T-Shirt and by the same token and evidence we have is he went on lavish vacations of his patrons dime to the tune of about $1m a year. The house that was bought from his mother and given back to her may up the total a bit for that year. No doubt there’s more but I doubt anyone gave him $100m as he would likely have already gone and fucked off somewhere. The point of giving him all the gifts is precisely so he does not fuck off somewhere. The good old boys want their guy in a position of power. Why? He doesn’t want to go and fuck off somewhere. He wants to powerful, he wants to be wined and dined, he wants to be seen as important, he wants to be constantly given things, he wants to live a life of luxury. No amount of money in his pocket would change any of that, he already has it all, why would he fuck off? The thing not being mentioned that’s germane to this is how back in the day Thomas basically made a threat that if justices weren’t paid more that “one or more would walk away”.

Oliver’s point is that billionaires heard that alarm bell and are bankrolling him to stay on the Gustav Forsling Swedish professional ice hockey defenceman for the Florida Panthers T-Shirt and by the same token and court because justice salaries were not raised. He’s pointing out the hypocrisy that he will pay far more for him to leave the court since that was his initial threat. “If someone doesn’t give me money to stay here then I’m leaving.” The government didn’t give him that, billionaires did. John is giving him the ability to actually make good on the threat he made years ago. Matt Walsh is having a meltdown over John Oliver doing this, by the way. “It’s illegal to bribe a Supreme Court justice!!” ‘Uncle’ Thom won’t be able to make this decision unilaterally, he would have to as his BOSS, the one that wears the pants aka his puppet master GINNY. Throughout the whole episode I was certain nothing would be done about these ethics rules and was pleasantly surprised at the end when John found a way to make everyone legally pay attention. He has used flaws and loopholes in the law system in previous episodes to point out things that need to be fixed.
