Office culture is obsolete. I technically have teammates who are in ATL with me but they work on completely different technology. Imagine me working on Firefox and them working on Safari, both browsers but they are built seperately, so we have basically zero actual work overlap. I’m still expecected to come into the office 2 days a week…so I can join virtual meetings with my teammates in CHI and NYC. It makes zero sense. At the very least my manager has hinted to me that he knows it’s BS but required because the appearance of fairness. Was in the office last week and had a meeting scheduled. Three of us were in the office, one was in a different city. It took us 30 minutes of trying various ideas before we gave up and all went to separate meeting rooms and had the meeting remotely from our individual laptops. I hate it. I’m fine with having a hybrid model but until the panino chills the fuck out and we can have in person meetings again, let me stay the fuck at home. That’s literally my experience! My entire team is in a whole other country, but they still want me to show up! WTF? Ironic that Apple designed and built one of the most advanced office buildings ever. I wonder how recyclable it is. Or as Steve said: “It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do. We hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.” Here we are, the smart people that you hired, and we are telling you what to do: Please get out of our way, there is no one-size-fits-all solution, let us decide how we work best, and let us do the best work of our lives.

Idk how Apple can justify forcing people in the office when so many of their peer companies have fully embraced remote work If you’re willing to work in an office, the market is raging hot. It’s cooling rapidly for those who won’t, as more companies back off the permanent work-from-home bandwagon. Competition for the WFH jobs is fierce. Good companies are getting hundreds of applicants for open programming positions because no one wants to go back into an office. Basically, if you’re going to do it, don’t quit first — you may discover it’s not as easy as you thought, unless you are willing to give up a big chunk of your comp. (Like half or more!) This is happening at my company as well. We have a similar setup. Free snack, unlimited beverages, catered lunches, beer fridges, xbox/playstation, pinball and arcade games. Everything a growing programmer could want. Noone is coming back into the office. The CEO is trying everyithing to get people back into the office, but nothing is enticing people back. Personally i think the C suite wants people back in the office because its where they feel the most powerfull sense of kinship in their life. when you reach C suite levels, I feel they rarely have lives outside of their career so not have the day to day interactions in person creates that hole there. maybe they are just lonely.
